Crystal Thursday – Malachite

Good morning Crystal Lovers it’s Crystal Thursday and we are taking a look at Malachite, a copper based mineral found all over the world. Mining is done in countries such as Russia, Africa, France England, Mexico and here in the US.

Before we get too far into our conversation about Malachite I would like to mention that because of the copper content in this beautiful multi-shaded green mineral it is toxic and care must be taken if handling it in raw form. Prolonged contact with the high copper content, whether handling or breathing in the dust can have an adverse affect on red blood cell formation. If you are working with raw Malachite I suggest wearing a mask and washing you hands well after if you don’t wear gloves. Once tumbled or polished the risk is pretty much resolved.

From what I’ve been able to discover about the first find it was a very long time ago. Approximately 10,000 years ago it is said to have been discovered in the Shanidar Valley of Northern Iraq. The mining and use of Malachite has been going on for around 6000 years for jewelry, statuary and for architectural use making this one of the oldest semi precious stones in use today.

The Chakras Malachite resonate with begin at the Heart and work down to the Root Chakra. Malachite is known as a warrior stone because it increases courage, increases self confidence and personal power then gives you the courage to follow your heart.

Let’s take a look at some of the metaphysical qualities Malachite has to offer when working with it.

  • It is said to absorb negativity from your aura leaving you feel stronger and more confident.
  • Helps you work through issues to bring a balance to your emotions.
  • As a talisman of personal protection it helps keep people from draining your personal energy.
  • It helps detox your liver and kidneys.
  • It helps lower blood pressure and support good blood circulation.
  • The copper content in Malachite can help reduce pain in joints.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief look at Malachite. If its qualities resonate with you I encourage you to purchase a piece and work with it. Keep in mind I am not a doctor and sharing healing qualities of this stone or any crystal or mineral is in no way giving medical advice. Working with it can help but if you are ill see your medical practitioner of choice.

Crystal Thursday – Ruby Included Zoisite

Good morning crystal lovers we are back with a crystal combination I originally wrote about back in April of 2018 and that is Ruby Included Zoisite. It was first found by an Englishman named Tom Blevins in the Longido area of Tanzania near Mt. Kilimanjaro sometime between 1949 and 1954. My research hasn’t pinpointed a specific date so I am sticking to the range of five years as being as close as I can get for now. To date Tanzania is the only source for of this mineral combination. Because it is found in small quantities it is considered rare.

With pink and green being Heart Chakra colors it is no surprise that this beauty resonates very well with both the Heart and Root Chakras. It has a wonderfully warm, loving and encouraging energy. On the Mohs scale Ruby Zoisite comes in at a nice workable 6 to 7.

One of the things I think is cool about Ruby Included Zoisite is that this combination of minerals will not let you sit idly by. The Ruby is a stone of courage and strength while Zoisite is like a reset button that refocuses your attention back to what is important. It will then help you take the idea or goal and make it a reality. If you have a problem staying on task, wear or carry a piece with you!

Working with both the Heart and Root Chakras this stone also helps identify what negative energies we are hanging onto like sadness, anger, fear or lost hope then helps release it so it can transmute to positive energy. Some of the other qualities Ruby Included Zoisite has to offer are:

  • Helps activate intuitive ability.
  • Helps you communicate with spirit guides.
  • It increases life force energy and delivers a constant flow.
  • It is said to attract money by increasing your determination for success.
  • I personally have not worked with it in this way but it is said that Ruby Included Zoisite is an excellent tool for meditation and will aid in astral and inter-dimensional travel. This is not something I recommend beginners do alone.
  • Helps release toxic emotions
  • Strengthens the immune system and protects the body from viruses

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief look at Ruby Included Zoisite. If its qualities resonate with you I encourage you to purchase a piece and work with it. Keep in mind I am not a doctor and sharing healing qualities of this stone or any crystal or mineral is in no way giving medical advice. Working with it can help but if you are ill see your medical practitioner of choice.

Crystal Thursday – Astrophyllite

Good morning crystal lovers. Today’s article is about a rare Feldspar called Astrophyllite. My original post was back in March of 2018. In my research for my first post I wasn’t able to locate any first find inormation beyond Astrophyllite being found in Norway. This time I found a bit more.

The first find was by a gentleman named Paul Christian Wiebye on Laven Island off the coast of Norway in 1844. Unfortunately the geological community didn’t recognize this find until ten years later when a guy, brace yourself, named Carl Johan August Theodor Sheerer researched Wiebyes find and named it. Aside from Norway other locations where mining is going on are in Russia, Greenland, Canada and Colorado here in the US.

From what I understand Russia currently has the largest available product on the market but still that isn’t a lot because Astrophyllite is hard to find and mine without damage. It forms on the inside of host minerals rather than piggybacking on the outside. Some people have mistaken Nuumite and Astrophyllite for one another. Sure both have gorgeous flashes of color but in the case of today’s crystal topic the color is in the form of blades rather than small pieces of color.

All the samples I’ve personally seen have been dark golden brown to almost black. My research says Astrophyllite can also be found in white, grey, orange and occasionally green. While I adore my palm stone I have yet to find a whole piece. This girl has some shopping to do! The Chakras that Astrophyllite resonate with are the Third Eye and Crown. The Mohs Scale of hardness has it at a 3 – 4.

The energy of this stone is intense and doesn’t play around. This is a manifestation stone that helps transform your life and open you for personal and spiritual growth. When workingwith it be prepared to make huge life changes. It is not uncommon that what is not for you or your highest good, whatever that may be, will fall out of your life. It helps you find your strength, your voice, your true self and your life purpose.

A few of the other qualities Astrophyllite has to offer are:

  • It fills you with so much light that negativity has no place to hide, so it leaves.
  • It releases the hold your past has on you so you can move forward. No one is defined by their past decisions. They are mearly stepping stones to our future and the people we are becoming.
  • It makes us more aware of synchronicities in our lives and what they can mean.
  • Although I have never tried meditating with Astrophyllite for the purpose of astral travel, it is said to be very good for that purpose.
  • It can help you remember, learn from and heal past life issues.
  • Being a Feldspar it helps strengthen psychic abilities.
  • Astrophyllite is said to heal health issues on a cellular issues. In my research I didn’t find any clear indication of this but working with it won’t hurt or intensify any problems so I though I’d mention it.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief look at Astrophyllite. If its qualities resonate with you I encourage you to purchase a piece and work with it. Keep in mind I am not a doctor and sharing healing qualities of this stone or any crystal or mineral is in no way giving medical advice. Working with it can help but if you are ill see your medical practitioner of choice.

Crystal Thursday – Black Moonstone

Good Thursday morning everyone. Welcome back to another Crystal Thursday. Today’s topic, Black Moonstone, was originally posted on my blog February 23, 2018. This beauty is a member of the Feldspar family and is often confused with Labradorite, another member of the family. I found one source when researching that said Black Moonstone was Labradorite. That is not true of course. Yes they are cousins but chemically they are different.

Many articles say the only source for this crystal is Madagascar where Black Moonstone has been found recently. I don’t believe this to be the case. One article stated if you were to buy a piece sourced from anywhere other than Madagascar it would probably be a fake. That statement confused me a bit so I took the question to a geologist friend who owns a marvelous crystal and mineral shop locally. He told me Moonstone, including Black can be found all over the world in countries like Brazil, Australia and India. For black to occur there needs to be Manganese present in the soil in some quantity.

Depending on the quantity of Manganese the color can range from light gray to black with swirling lines of gray, tan and peach. When the light is right pieces can appear silver. Like other colors of Moonstone, the black variety can be found to be translucent or opaque. On the Mohs scale it comes in at 6 to 6.5 and it resonates well with the third eye and Crown Chakra.

I’ve explained before that members of a crystal family share a certain amount qualities as well as having some specific to themselves depending on what makes them unique. It could be and often is the color and what mineral creates it.

As a Family Moonstone share qualities like enhancing intuition, increasing creativity and strengthening the connection to Goddess energy. Moonstone is also known to help you get your life on track.

Black Moonstone is a great choice to work with during the Dark Moon Cycle because it is a stone of beginnings whether it is a new idea for a project, a new relationship, or an overall fresh start. This is the stone that can help you form and set the intentions to make your new beginning a reality. It does this by helping you focus on your life path and break through old outdated thought patterns and belief systems.

A few other qualities this lovely crystal has to share are:

  • It helps you connect to you Guardian angel and guides.
  • Being black it is both very grounding and protective of your energy.
  • It has a nurturing quality that calms and helps relieve stress.
  • It helps heal lady monthly issues like cramping, flow and fertility problems.
  • It helps clear digestive and respiratory issues.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief look at Black Moonstone. If the qualities of this stone resonate with you I encourage you to purchase a piece and work with it. Keep in mind I am not a doctor and sharing healing qualities of this or any crystal or mineral is in no way giving medical advice. Working with it can help but if you are ill see your medical practitioner of choice.

Crystal Thursday – Serpentine

Good morning crystal lovers, welcome to Crystal Thursday. This weeks topic is a moderately rare mineral called Serpentine originally posted to my blog on March 31, 2018.

From what I found the name Serpentine has two schools of thought. One says it is the color that is snake like. Being green with occasional flecks of brown, black and yellow is kind of snake like. The other says the name comes from the way it forms in plates that resemble snakeskin. I will leave it to you, my readers, to decide which story you want to believe.

Serpentine is not a single mineral, it’s a group of several divided into two categories. One being fibrous which are used in making Asbestos and the other non-fibrous which has been in use since ancient times for jewelry, ornamental pieces such as decorative bowls and statuary as well as decorative purposes in buildings as floor tile, wall or other creative uses. A couple non fibrous examples of are Antigorite and Lizardite.

Many ancient cultures were quite fond of Serpentine for it’s beautiful green color that is the result of a nickel, chromium and cobalt mixture. The color of the stone varies from light to dark green depending on the amount of these chemicals. It can also be found in a range from opaque to transparent.

On the Mohs Scale of hardness Serpentine is anywhere from a three to a six making it very useful for carving and shaping. Some of the locations it’s found in around the world are here in the US, Canada, China, Italy, Britain and Russia.

Now let’s get to the fun stuff and look at some of the metaphysical qualities of Serpentine.

  • Serpentine resonates, and clears all chakras.
  • It is said to develop a feeling of inner peace and calm.
  • It is said wearing or carrying Serpentine can protect against negative energy and bad luck.
  • It is said to help balance digestive problems.
  • It is said to help menstrual cramps.
  • Some people believe it helps you live longer.
  • It is said to help ease dementia and Alzheimer symptoms.

Like all crystals and minerals the list of benefits gained from working with them is always interesting. I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief look at Serpentine. If the qualities of this stone resonate with you I encourage you to purchase a piece and work with it. Keep in mind I am not a doctor and sharing healing qualities of this or any crystal or mineral is in no way giving medical advice. Working with it can help but if you are ill see your medical practitioner of choice.

Crystal Thursday – Shiva Lingham

Good morning it is Crystal Thursday once again and we are looking at a crystal I originally posted about back on February 16, 2018. Our topic for today is, Shiva Lingham, a rare and sacred stone only found in the Narmanda River in India. During the dry season people go to the river and carefully pick up the stones and hand polish them according to Vedic Tradition.

The word Lingham is Sanskrit for symbol, so that means the stone is Shiva’s Symbol and they are used in worship. The stones naturally form the interesting phallic/egg shape and have different variations of banding colors of reddish brown, tan and black. There is a story that the Goddess Parvati hand shaped the Lingham from sand to represent both the Divine Male and Female. Each stone is unique in size and banding pattern. So any piece you buy is a one of a kind!

Even though it looks like Jasper, Shiva Lingham are composed mainly of Quartz mixed with other minerals so they are technically crystals. They resonate with all the chakras and help realign them. The Mohs scale for Shiva Lingham is a strong 7 but as this is a sacred stone they are rarely if ever carved.

Let’s get to the fun stuff and look at the metaphysical qualities of Shiva Lingham.

  • They boost energy and strength.
  • Intensifies inner transformation.
  • Helps us break old patterns of behavior so we have space for new ideas and growth.
  • Helps ground you to this lifetime.
  • They activate the kundalini energy.
  • They help you understand that you are unique yet part of a whole.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief look at Shiva Lingham. If the qualities of this stone resonate with you I encourage you to purchase a piece and work with it. Keep in mind I am not a doctor and sharing healing qualities of this stone or any crystal or mineral is in no way giving medical advice. Working with it can help but if you are ill see your medical practitioner of choice.

Crystal Thursday – Optical Calcite

Good morning, welcome to Crystal Thursday! The original post for today’s discussion was back on February 9, 2018. Our topic is an interesting form of Calcite called Optical Calcite. It’s interesting to me because of two things; one is that it’s clear and the other is the cool parallelogram shape you find them in. With more research done let’s discover what Optical Calcite has to offer those who work with it; but first a little background.

Calcite is one of the most common minerals on earth. This form is special because it is highly transparent. When polished it honestly looks like an ice cube. It was first discovered in the Helgustaoir Quarry near Reyoarf Iceland, which is why its alternate name is Iceland Spar but can also be found in other places around the world like Mexico, Brazil, Germany, US, the Czech Republic and China.

You know I like to find out when a crystal or mineral was first discovered, but it was difficult trying to pin down a date and a name to verify a first discovery. In my research one name kept coming up, Rasmus Bartholin, a Danish Doctor, Mathematician and Physicist. In 1669 he began studying this crystals double refraction quality. This tells us that in the 17th century Optical Calcite was a known crystal. There are stories told about Norse sailors and Vikings between the 8th and 11th century being able to accurately navigate the oceans even on cloudy days. They apparently used something they called a “Sunstone” to find the sun and get to where they were going. That crystal is Optical Calcite.

Another interesting fact about is that during WW2 Optical Calcite was used for the sighting of the big Norden Bombsite equipment. It is a very soft crystal. On the Mohs Scale it’s a three so for jewelry it’s really not practical; but it does have ornamental and industrial uses. Back in the day it had been used for decorative tile and statuary as Optical Calcite can be found in a range of colors like pink, green, yellow and lavender. There was a choice as to what you wanted to work with. It is also used in making fertilizer and cement.

Now let’s take a look at the fun stuff and talk about the metaphysical uses for Optical Calcite. If I had to give one word to describe what I feel is its most helpful attribute I would say clarity. This high energy crystal helps you see things from a different, less emotional perspective. With this new level of clarity you can see beyond the issue or the mistake to find a solution.

Other qualities are:

  • Resonates well with the Crown and Soul Star Chakra.
  • It helps clear attachments.
  • When placed in a room it will clear stagnant energy.
  • It is an energy amplifier.
  • Helps increase focus.
  • Helps clear fear-based emotions.
  • It is said to increase memory.
  • It strengthens your ability to be discerning.
  • Helps balance calcium in the body.
  • Helps your body absorb vitamins and minerals.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief look at Optical Calcite.

Crystal thursday – Sodalite

Hello everyone, thank you for coming back to join in another Crystal Thursday. This week we’re talking about the beautiful Blue to Blue Violet mineral, Sodalite. My original post was back on December 21 of 2017. This mineral is sometimes confused with Lapis Lazuli. While Lapis does contain some white, Sodalite doesn’t contain pyrite inclusions but can occasionally have purple, orange or yellow inclusions.

Some sources consider it rare because gem quality Sodalite is not as common a find as other minerals and crystals. It has been used for jewelry and as an ornamental /architectural stone since its discovery between 1806 and 1811 in Greenland; it became more widely used after 1891 when a large deposit was discovered in Canada. Some other locations where Sodalite has been found are Namibia, Russia, Brazil and here in the United States. The Mohs scale of hardness has it a nice 5.5 – 6 and Sodalite resonates with the Throat and Third Eye Chakra.

Sodalite is a great stone to work with for spiritual and communication reasons. It helps align our physical and spiritual selves so we can live as our truest selves. Let’s look at some of the other metaphysical qualities it offers.

  • It helps improve focus and find clarity about issues going on in our lives.
  • It helps clear negativity and improves confidence.
  • Helps improve communication.
  • Encourages speaking your truth.
  • Helps balance your emotions.
  • Helps open and strengthen psychic ability.
  • Helps connect you to your intuition.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief look at Sodalite.

Crystal Thursday – Sapphire

Good morning everyone. Crystal Thursday has come around again to share some information about Sapphire. The original post was back on December 15 of 2017. This crystal is a type of Corundum that is found in several colors. Blue is the most popular and valuable color but it is also found in pink, green, yellow, clear and red which we know as Rubies. All others are called Sapphire regardless of color.

Except for the Star Sapphire most are transparent to translucent. The Start Sapphire is the result of something called Asterism which is a fancy word that means the crystal is Rutilated. When the Rutile lays down in a particular way it creates either a six or twelve point star. These are sometimes heat treated to dissolve the Rutile and in the process the color of the crystal is intensified.

This is a hard crystal; even more than Quartz. On the Mohs scale of hardness it is a nine which is why it’s excellent for making jewelry. Sapphire resonates with the Third Eye and Crown Chakras.

The Sapphire is one of those crystals with such a long history that it’s difficult to know exactly when it was first discovered or by whom. From what I’ve been able to discover in researching The Etruscans were quite fond of Sapphires during the later part of their empire, around the sixth and seventh century. In the 13th century while Marco Polo was adventuring he took a trip to what is now Sri Lanka and found Sapphires which he talked about at length in his “Book of Wonders”.

Moving forward through history the ancient Greeks wore Sapphire when visiting an oracle. The Buddhists believed they brought enlightenment; Medieval Kings wore Sapphire as a symbol of power and wealth as well as to bring wisdom. During the Renaissance they became the favorite of the wealthy.

Here is the United States a source of gem quality Sapphire was discovered by gold miners near Helena Montana in 1865. A few other sources are in Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, Afghanistan and Madagascar.

So let’s get to the fun stuff and take a look at some of the metaphysical qualities Sapphire has to offer those who work with it.

  • Helps to increase clarity.
  • Helps to strengthen intuition.
  • Helps to clear negative thoughts.
  • Helps to calm and focus the mind.
  • Believed to attract Divine favor.
  • It is said to improve creativity.
  • It is said to relieve headaches.
  • It is said to help connect with guides.
  • Helps gain wisdom.
  • Helps ease depression.
  • Helps restore balance to the body physically, mentally and spiritually.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief look at Sapphire.

Crystal Thursday – Iolite

Good morning everyone. It is Crystal Thursday again and we’re taking a look at the lovely Iolite. My original post for this crystal was back on the 8th of December 2017. Because of its beautiful blue color Iolite is sometimes mistaken for Sapphire. Some even call it Water Sapphire but it has, in fact, a different chemical makeup. Iolite is Gem Quality Cordierite and Sapphire is a type of Corundum.

The head of this crystal family, Cordierite, was discovered in Spain around 1813 and named for French Geologist Louis Cordier. It can be found in several colors, one of which is today’s topic so let’s get back to it. Iolite was discovered by W. Dan Hausel in Palmer Creek Wyoming in 1996. Iolite is considered fairly rare but it can be found in Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Canada in addition to Wyoming.

Iolite’s color can vary from light to deep blue/violet and from transparent to translucent. The more transparent it is the higher its value. It also has this interesting color flash characteristic called Pleochriosm. Now I am no geologist and don’t pretend to be but the best explanation I can give is that when turned in the light colors can be seen like yellow, light blue or grey depending on the angle. Emeralds and Tanzanite are known to also have this characteristic. The beautiful blue of this crystal resonates well with the third eye chakra. It’s also very hard, on the Mohs scale Iolite comes in at 7-7.5 making it a good choice for jewelry.

Let’s get to the fun part and discuss a few of the metaphysical characteristics of Iolite. Interestingly enough the energy of this crystal is quite calming. As it resonates with the Third Eye you’d think the energy would feel more active but it does all its work with an energy that’s calm.

  • Iolite relieves stress.
  • It relieves Migraines.
  • When placed under a pillow it will help relieve insomnia and nightmares.
  • It works very well for spiritual inner journeying but this should be done with an
    experienced guide.
  • It opens your intuition and helps expand psychic ability
  • It will help you move through periods of change in your life by helping you gain perspective and the determination make necessary change.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this brief look at Iolite. If the qualities of this stone resonate with you I encourage you to purchase a piece and work with it. Keep in mind I am not a doctor and sharing the healing qualities of this or any crystal or mineral is in no way giving medical advice. Working with it can help but if you are ill see your medical practitioner of choice.
